William R. Koenig, 73 of Mancelona died Jan. 20, 2014 after a 10 month valiant fight with cancer. He was born May 3, 1940, in Queens, NY, the son of William M. and Rosalie M. (Kurtz) Koenig. William was an avid pilot who loved to fly and flew commercially. He was a flight instructor and an FAA safety officer. In his free time William enjoyed volunteering at the FAA productions Fun n' Sun Studio at Lakeland, FL. He also enjoyed drag racing and off shore boat racing. He was a collector of many things especially older tractors and boats. On Dec. 31, 1993 he married Patricia Jo Cooper, in Medeira, FL who survives. They enjoyed 20 years in sunny Florida before heading north to Mancelona, to be with their family in 2012. Also surviving are his children William (Erin) Koenig of Mancelona, daughter Angel Carr of Tampa, FL, sister Rosalie Koenig of IN, grandchildren Max Koenig, Sarah Koenig, Alicia and Samantha Newberry, and 4 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his infant son John Edward Koenig, and parents. A funeral mass will be held Sat. Feb. 1st at 11 a.m. at St, Anthony Catholic Church in Mancelona with Fr. Dale Magoon officiating. The family will receive friends starting at 10 a.m. Memorial contributions can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
