William (Bill) Hallandal August 28, 1937 Flint, MI to June 19, 2022 Bellaire, MI.
Bill loved all things car, jazz, and his family. Graduating from General Motors Institute, he dove into a career in automotive design with long tenures at Whitson Engineering and then Ford Automotive. However, his abiding passion was cars, and much of his free time was spent meticulously rebuilding and racing cars, from open-wheel formula cars to vintage Porsches. He was an expert under the hood and behind the wheel. Some of his family and friends’ fondest memories are of Bill taking his victory lap after a well-run race, sometimes with a family member holding the checkered flag. In fact, he met his wife at the racetrack.
Bill’s innate kindness could best be seen when he was with his grandchildren. He was a deeply loyal and staunch father, husband and friend and is truly missed. He was preceded in death by his parents Cecil and Julia (Schrah) Hallandal. Bill is survived by his wife of 26 years, Shirley (née Duke), married February 3, 1996, and his children Robert W. Hallandal (Rebecca), Pamala S. Van Mullekom (Michael), Cynthia L. Umphrey (Richard Gibout), and David J. Umphrey (Lisa) as well as his grandchildren, Leanna Mandeville, David Mandeville, Chloe Morgan, Hannah Ulanski, Elijah Hallandal, Alexander Hallandal, Richard Gibout, Triston Winterich, and Anna Umphrey and his great grandson Troy Mandeville.
