William C. Folk, 87 of Torch Lake Twp., died Sun. July 10, 2011 at Munson Medical Center. He was born Nov. 9, 1923, in Grand Rapids, the son of Wilbur and Irene (Glant) Folk. Bill proudly served in the US Army during WWII. He was an active member of the Traverse City VFW Post 2780, Williamsburg American Legion Post 289, and the Elk Rapids VFW. Bill worked for 31 years at American Seating in Grand Rapids before moving north. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, and being a Ham Radio operator. He also enjoyed senior dancing in his later years. In 1990 in Torch Lake Twp. he married Arlene Drogt Smedley, who survives. He is also survived by his children Debby (Mike) Cummer and Susan Folk all of Fife Lake, grandchildren Stephanie Folk and Toni (Chad)Emert, great grandchildren Josephine and Jackie, step-children Sheron (Garth) Mortensen of Alden, Lois (Eugene) Wilson of Cadillac, John (Rochelle) Smedley and Julia Smedley all of Torch Lake Twp., many step grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Josephine Maas in 1988, and his brothers and sisters and stepson Mark Smedley. Memorial graveside services with military honors will be held Fri. July 15, at 11:30 am at Maple Grove Cemetery, Elk Rapids. A luncheon will follow at the Elk Rapids VFW. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Elk Rapids VFW. Arrangements have been handled by the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.
