Virginia Wierda

Virginia C. Wierda, 84, of Eastport, died Friday, October 23, 2009 at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. She was born January 16, 1925 in Saginaw, the daughter of Lee (Julia) Case. Virginia graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Physical Therapy. She practiced in Grand Rapids and Saginaw for many years, working with children. Virginia enjoyed gardening and baking. She also enjoyed music, and playing the piano and the organ. Virginia treasured the time she spent with her grandchildren. On October 23, 1948, in Saginaw, she married Gerrit J. Wierda. In 1977 they moved to Eastport and made their home on the shores of Torch Lake. She is survived by her loving husband of 61 years. She is also survived by her children: Gerrit "Lee" (Carolyn) Wierda of Bay City, Christopher J. (Kaye) Wierda of Coralville, IA, and Deborah W. (David) Ott of Goshen, IN, grandchildren Jennifer (Jason) Bechtold, Brian (Lauren) Ott, Stephen (Sarah) Ott, Michael Wierda, Justin Ott, McKenzie Wierda, Katherine Wierda, brother John (Mai) Case of Renton, WA, sister Kathleen Woods of Maple Valley, WA, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents. Memorial services will be held Friday, October 30, at Eleven a.m. at the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes with Pastor Harold Kruse officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Antrim County Commission on Aging.
