Violet "Babe" Shannon left this world for her well-deserved rest and peace on June 14, 2014. Violet Louise Johnson was born on February 21, 1924 in Oil City, Pennsylvania. Violet had a rough start to her life but this would later make her a determined, strong willed young woman.
Violet left home at 17 to work for the US Army in support positions. She had many adventures traveling the US, including taking flight lessons and attending business classes. She spent the later part of WWII working at the Pentagon until she left to take on a new adventure as wife to Charles Shannon, a recent Army Veteran. Charles and Violet went on to have four daughters, Sandra Shannon, Deborah Shannon, Mona (Shannon) Minish, and Penny Shannon. Violet later added her favorite son-in-law Bill Minish to the family as well as grandchildren Bill Minish Jr, Shana Minish, Randy Minish, Jenna Minish, and Cheryle Shannon.
Violet spent many years giving back to the community through her nursing skills and endless volunteer work. She received many awards for her work with the Salvation Army, seniors and homeless veterans in the Royal Oak and Detroit communities. After moving to Bellaire in 2000, Violet switched her focus to her other love, animals, volunteering at With a Little Help From My Friends. Violet leaves behind her adoring companion and constant sidekick Buddy, her latest rescue dog she met through her volunteer work.
Proceeding her in death were Charles, her beloved husband of 56 years, and her beautiful daughters Penny Lou and Deborah Lynn as well as several precious pets.
As per request, there will be no memorial service. Violet was laid to rest next to Charles at the Oakview Cemetery in Royal Oak Michigan. Memorial remembrances can be made to With a Little Help From My Friends' Pet Crisis Center, 3820 Ritt Rd, Bellaire, MI 49615.
