Thurman McCarty

Mancelona, MI – Thurman Wesley McCarty, 87, of Mancelona, MI passed peacefully on his birthday, Nov 6, 2018.  Thurman was born in Antrim, MI and lived his entire life in Mancelona and married Vivian Joyce Burley on Nov 17, 1956.

Thurman treasured his time with family, hunting, either building/repairing or fiddling with something and most of all fishing for perch.  Many years he would be found on Clam Lake or Clam River near Alden, MI in search of the illusive perch.  He also enjoyed the fishing trips to Wakami Lake, Ontario, Canada, where his oldest brother took him before there was even a campground there.  Yearly trips followed and in June, 2018, he made his final trip.  Many memories where made there with family and friends.

Thurman was honorably discharged as a Pfc (E-3) from the U.S. Army, serving from March 11, 1952 through February 26, 1954.  He was stationed in Germany and was responsible for maintaining tanks and other vehicles.

Started a lifetime employment at Mt. Clemens Metal Product, Mancelona Plant in December 1954 and continued there through several name changes until he retired from Dura Automotive in May, 1994.

He took pleasure in traveling and camping with his wife to visit his son’s family in Florida, California & District of Columbia and even drove to Alaska to see family members.

He is survived by his loving wife, Joyce, son Edward (Cathy) McCarty of Mancelona, daughter Lori Hines-Doty of Mancelona, seven grandchildren: Steven (Sarahmae) McCarty of Denver, CO; James (Ashley) McCarty of Denver, CO; Kayla Hines and fiancé Dominic Padovini of Macomb, MI; Michael Hines and Brady Brennan of New Jersey;  Ryan (Dani) McCarty of Kalkaska; Drew McCarty of Mancelona, and Brie McCarty of Traverse City.  Seven Great-grandchildren: Jaden, Katelynn, Bella, Scarlette, Tristen, Vivienne and Khaliea.  Many nephews and nieces.

He is proceeded in death by his son, Craig, parents, Ace and Nona McCarty, brothers: Leathel (Abe), Russell (Windy) and Clayton (Andy); Sisters: Emily, Stella, Jewell and Nellie; and son-in-law Ken.

Thurman was cremated per his wishes and a grave site service with military honors will be conducted at Fairview Cemetery, Mancelona.
