Terry graduated from Charlevoix High School in 1966, and a few years later enlisted in the United States Army. He served during the Vietnam War from June 9, 1970, to March 30, 1972, earning the rank of SP5. Terry was a combat engineer working as a blade grader operator building roads and bridges in Vietnam.
