Stanley Ray Martin, 71, of Charlevoix, died Sunday, September 27, 2015, at his home. He was born June 29, 1944, in Charlevoix to John and Margaret (Boss) Martin. Stan graduated from Charlevoix High School in 1962, where he enjoyed playing basketball and football. He continued to play in many recreational leagues and coach those sports following high school.
On July 14, 1967, Stan married Carol Ann Shooks in Charlevoix.
From 1966 to 1969, he served in the US Army in Vietnam.
Stan earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Central Michigan University in 1972. He taught at the Charlevoix Elementary School in the same room for twenty-seven years, and his daughter, Krista, now teaches in that room.
Stan was a member of the Community Reformed Church in Charlevoix, and served on the Charlevoix Township Planning Commission.
Stan loved to golf with his buddies and enjoyed coffee with his friends every morning at Burger King. Stanley was especially proud of his lawn and worked to keep it in perfect condition.
He is survived by his wife, Carol; daughters, Krista (John) Jarema of Charlevoix, Rebecca (Tim) Burger of Tiverton, R.I., Anne (Dan) Covey of Walker; grandchildren, Alison, Caroline, Jack, and Matthew Jarema; Zachary Tibbits, Scarlett and Libby Burger; Brayden, Ethan, Addison and Jakob Covey, and baby L.; brother, John (Sonja) Martin; sister, Donna Martin all of Charlevoix. Stan was preceded in death by his grandson, Spencer Tibbits; brother, Larry; and parents, John and Margaret Martin.
Memorial service will be 4 pm, Friday, October 2, 2015, at the Community Reformed Church in Charlevoix, where the family will meet friends beginning at 3 pm. The Reverend Chip Sauer will officiate.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Community Reformed Church, or to the Charlevoix Elementary School Teachers.
