Shirley Ann Stoel, 86 of Central Lake, passed away on January 9, 2024, in her
home in Charlevoix, MI. She was born on July 3, 1937, the daughter of Leon and Lavonna
(Corner) Disbrow. Preceding her in death was her husband David Daniel Stoel, father Leon
Disbrow and younger sister Shelby Elggleston. Shirley and David were united in marriage on January 2, 1955 and made their home in Banks Township. Shirley was a full-time mother to five children, while working on what was known as their “family farm” in Eastport, MI.
Shirley enjoyed sewing, participating in social clubs that included handmade crafts, gardening, and listening to the Tigers Baseball game. Shirley was known at the Charlevoix Munson Medical OB
department to show up with a heaping bag of handmade blankets for the newborns to
take home after their arrival. Shirley was a kind, fun-loving Grandmother/Great
grandmother. She never passed up a chance to squeeze her grandchildren's cheeks
and never left them without a big hug and “I love you”. She had no issue getting on the
floor and playing one-on-one with the small kids and not one remorse about putting you
back in place when they were getting out of hand.
Shirley was known for her laughter and to this day being undefeated in the game “pick up sticks”. She was seen in most pictures with her grandchildren/great-grandchildren laughing and just being silly. In her later years, she kept very busy attending to her pride
and joy, her family, as she had 12 Grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren. Shirley
never passed up a chance to go out for a country drive and was known to stop and get a
single scoop of ice cream and a single hamburger. Only to insist on sharing that one scoop
and half burger with whoever joined her on that country drive. She loved to just sit and
watch the birds that would come and go with each season. Shirley loved to sit and chat
with anyone who had a good story and didn’t pass up a chance to fill you in if you ran
into her doing errands around town.
Shirley lived a very minimalist lifestyle. Shirley never took for granted the small things
in life including reminding you of your faith in the Lord all mighty, what was most
important in life, and who to lean on when you needed an ear to listen. Shirley will be
missed by anyone who met and spent any time with her.
Surviving are her five children: Terry Rowe of Charlevoix, Mark (Nancy) Stoel, of
Wisconsin, Linda (Dale) Zeitler of Charlevoix, MI, Tamar (Carl) Whitley of Charlevoix, MI and
Annette of Indian River, MI. Brother Wallace Disbrow (Susan) and Sister Mary Ellen Parker, and
Mother Lavonna Disbrow. 12 Grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.
A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, January 13, at 1 PM, at the Barnard United Methodist Church. Visitation will take place from 12 Noon until the time of the service. Pastor Patty Alridge will be officiating.
Arrangements are in the care of the Charlevoix Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.
