Shirley D. Lucas, 65, of Mancelona died Wed. Dec. 9, 2009 at home after a brief battle with cancer. She was born Apr. 13, 1944, in Mancelona Twp., the daughter of Arthur E. and Mary Ida (Sheldon) Alexander. Shirley was a life long resident of the Mancelona/Alden area. She was employed for many years at Dura Auto. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, reading, camping and walking. Shirley especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She attended New Hope Community Church for many years. On Jan. 20, 1961, in Alba, she married James Dale Lucas who survives. Also surviving are her children Ed (Teresa) Lucas of Traverse City, James Lucas of Elk Rapids, Vicki (David) Hiser of Alden, and son Jimmy Gibbs of Muskegon, brothers Artie Alexander of New York, David (Jodi) Alexander of Grand Rapids, and Rick (Debbie) Alexander of Mancelona, her mother Mary Ida Kresnak of Mancelona, sisters Mary (Cliff) Scholl of Mancelona and Linda (Farrell) Thomas of Grayling, grandchildren Jimmy, Andy, Stephanie, Thomas, Lindsey, Emily, Cecelia, and Heidi, 2 step grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father Arthur Alexander, brother Bill Alexander, and stepfather Michael Kresnak. Funeral services will be held Sat. Dec. 12, at Eleven a.m. at the Mancelona Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes with Rev. Tim Manzer and Pastor Dan Brothers officiating. The family will receive friends Fri. Dec. 11, from 6 to 8 p.m. also at the funeral home. A private burial will be held in Fairview Cemetery, Mancelona. Memorial contributions may be directed to the New Hope Community Church Pantry.
