Sandra Ann Knight (King) of Bellaire passed away peacefully at Meadowbrook Medical Care Facility on March 26. She was born on July 7, 1938 in Benton Harbor, Michigan. Sandie earned a Bachelor's Degree from the University of Michigan and a Master's from Oakland University. For 28 years, Sandie taught English and was the yearbook and newspaper advisor at Harrison and North Farmington High Schools. In 2002, Sandie retired in order to realize her dream of living full-time on Clam Lake. Sandie was an active skier, sailor, and kayaker who loved paddling on the Grass River and watching the loons. She enjoyed cooking for family and spoiling her grandchildren and cats. In 2010, she married Morris Bates. They loved to make, sell, and talk about their unique hot sauce. She felt passionately about living in Antrim County and enjoyed visiting the area's orchards and supporting local businesses.
She is survived by her children, Eric (Brigette) Dawson, Jennifer (Bill French) Dawson, six loving grandchildren and her siblings Harry King, Tom (Jeanne) King, and Mary (Barry) Buschmann and their children, and grandchildren. Also surviving are her husband Morris Bates, and stepfamily: Erik (Brooke) Bates, three grandsons and a great-granddaughter and Bill (Patricia) Drollinger, Kim (Jerry) Cannon and their children and grandchildren.
A June celebration for family and friends is planned. Memorial contributions can be made to The Grass River Natural Area, 6500 Alden Highway, Box 231, Bellaire Michigan, 49615.
