Sally Rozella Hebden

Sally R. Hebden, 87 of Bellaire, died peacefully on Sunday, December 10, 2023 at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility.  She was born on June 28, 1936, in Flint, Michigan, the daughter of Howard Lewis and Gladys (Gorham) Carey.

On March 29, 1958, in Bellaire, Sally married the love of her life Charles “Chuck” Hebden who survives.  Also surviving are her children Lori (Bob) Smalley, Tom (Linda Paullin) Hebden and Tim Hebden, her grandchildren Erik (Katie) Smalley, Heidi Smalley, Brad (Stefanie) Hebden, Travis (Colleen) Hebden, Jennifer Hebden, Chris (Kassidy) Hebden, Ellie Hebden. and Katherine Hebden.  Also surviving are two great-grandchildren, Jacob Smalley and Carter Hebden, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Bud Lewis and sisters, Connie Troll and Bonnie Strauss.

Sally began working at the front desk of Schuss Mountain in 1967 (the year it opened) rising to management positions at Schuss and later Shanty Creek Management.  After her retirement in 1992, Sally spent several years providing consulting services to ClubCorp International traveling to ski resorts throughout the United States and Canada.

Despite Sally’s career success, Chuck and her family were her first love.  Sally enjoyed her summers with family and friends on Intermediate Lake and winters in Pensacola and Gulf Shores.  She was a “hands on” grandma, always an eager participant in grandkids’ adventures whether it was being buried in sand at the beach or picking peaches on the farm.

Sally both enjoyed and was knowledgeable about sports – especially the Michigan State Spartans and the Detroit Tigers.   She loved nothing more than watching her children play sports for Bellaire High School, never missing an event despite her busy work schedule.  Later she enjoyed attending many games for her grandchildren, surprising them with her in-depth post-game analysis.

Sally was a passionate advocate of the Democratic party throughout her life and enjoyed working on political campaigns with her mother.  In her later years, she enjoyed long walks around Intermediate Lake and day trips to Petoskey and Traverse City.
