Russell Waara

Russell Whitney Waara, 74, of Central Lake Twp., Torch Lake, died peacefully at home Thursday, Dec. 11, 2014.

Russell was a creator, engineer, and a builder. Those who knew Russ will remember his innate ability to understand how things worked, and if they weren't working, how to fix them. He was always generous with his tools and talents, willing to lend a hand and solve the problem. He had an amazing work ethic and attention to detail. With his wife Marcia, they built their home on Torch Lake where they loved to host friends and family and enjoy the sunsets.

Russell was a Michigander through and through; a native of Dearborn, he spent 18 years in Marquette and another 18 on Torch Lake. He loved Red Wings hockey, telling stories and jokes, computers and technology, and being with people. He was a Navy veteran, during which time he spent 13 months in Antarctica at McMurdo Station.

Surviving Russ are his wife of 41 years, Marcia (Haeger) Waara, their daughter Whitney Kirstin Waara and her husband Samuel Augusta, grandsons Arlo Franklin, Magnus Russell, and Iver Saxon, all of Traverse City, his brothers Vernon (Linda) Waara of Livonia, and Donald (Mary Ann) Waara of Bellaire, family and many friends.

Graveside services with Military Honors will be held Mon. Dec. 15, at 10 am at Lakeview Cemetery, Torch Lake.

Russ, along with a hardworking volunteer crew, spent the summer months this year building his latest legacy: a new barn. In honor of his life, his 75th birthday, and the barn-raising, we will also celebrate him in June.

In lieu of flowers, donations are encouraged to the Cowell Family Cancer Center, c/o Munson Healthcare Regional Foundation, 1150 Medical Campus Dr., Traverse City, Michigan 49684. (http://www.munsonhealthcare.org/?id=2717&sid=27)
