Robert D. Schaefer, 82, of Bellaire, died Sat. Mar. 3, 2012 at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center. He was born Dec. 6, 1929, in Cincinnati, OH, the son of LeRoy and Cora (Schweitzer) Schaefer. Robert proudly served in the U.S. Navy, where he was an officer on an aircraft carried during the Korean Conflict. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati earning his business degree and from Xavier University earning his master's degree. He was the mayor of Springboro, OH and was on the city council there. He retired from the Monsanto Company. Robert was also on the founding board of 2 YMCA's in Ohio and a member of the Lions Club there. He was passionate about wooden boats; fixing and refinishing. Robert enjoyed hunting with his bird dogs. Robert summered for many years in Bellaire and moved here permanently 11 years ago. He was an active member of the Church in the Hills as an Elder. On September 25, 1954, in Cincinnati, OH, he married Dorothy Grace Hurley, who survives. He is also survived by his children Kimberly (Richard) Webb of Danville, KY and Mark Schaefer of Springboro, OH, one granddaughter Sarah (Alex) Smith of Lexington, KY. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Richard Schaefer. A memorial service will be held Fri. Mar. 9th at 2 p.m. at the Church in the Hills, Bellaire, with Rev. David Ramage officiating. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Church in the Hills for the Memorial Garden or the Grass River Natural Area.
