Robert Campbell Pascoe, 88, of Bellaire and formerly of Detroit, died Tues. May 12th, at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire. He was born Dec. 12, 1920, in Whitewater Twp, Antrim County, the third child of George and Alice (Campbell) Pascoe. He attended Smith Elementary, Barbour Intermediate and Eastern High School in Detroit, graduating in 1938. Robert entered the US Army in 1942 and fought in the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium. He escaped German capture by submersing himself in a ravine for nearly two days, minimizing his surface breathing. After his discharge, he attended the Detroit Institute of Technology, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 1947. He was very bright and had a great engineering mind. He always had a screwdriver in his pocket and could fix anything. It is believed he invented the first baby monitor back in the early 1950's by linking walkie talkies down the laundry shoot of his sister Rosemary's house. Robert was the beloved "Uncle Bob" to many people, treating the neighborhood kids to ice cream on a regular basis. He lived a humble life, dedicated to serving others. He was soft spoken, kind hearted and even tempered. He was devoted to the upbringing of his nieces and nephews: taking them to Sunday school, helping out with homework, providing piano lessons, babysitting and taking them on vacation up to Mackinac Island. He worked as an engineer with American Standard before retiring Up North to Bellaire and the Meadow View Apartments in 1983. While at Meadow View he volunteered on a regular basis at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility which became his home in November 2001. Robert's warm smile and gentle demeanor will be dearly missed by all those who had the privilege of knowing him. Robert enjoyed playing golf and collecting stamps and coins. He was unbeatable in Jeopardy and loved walking his black lab, Charlie. Robert is survived by his younger sister, Rosemary (Donald Barrett), her four children: Jane, Rolland, Patricia, Laurie and their spouses and his eight great nieces and nephews, all whom loved him dearly. He was preceded in death by his sister Jane, who passed away two months shy of her 2nd birthday in 1917, and his sister Joan, who passed away in Southfield, on Christmas Eve, 2008 at the age of 90. Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 16, 2009 at One p.m. at the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes with Pastor Andrew Pomerville officiating. Interment will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery, Elk Rapids. The family will receive friends Saturday, from Eleven a.m. until the time of service. Memorial contributions may be directed to Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility. God's Kingdom rejoices in welcoming Robert, "Well done, good and faithful servant!" Matt 25:23
