Robert Mau

Robert Edwin Mau, Sr., 82, of Ellsworth, passed away Sunday, December 6, 2015, at Hiland Cottage Hospice in Petoskey. He was born July 25, 1933, in Detroit, to Edwin C. and Marguerite A. (Strick) Mau. In 1964, he married Beverly Ann Hegyan in Yale, Michigan. Bob graduated from General Motors Institute with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and then served in the US Army during the Korean War. Completing his duties as an SP4 at Fort Lee, Virginia, Bob was discharged with honors in January of 1964. His quality & reliability engineering career spanned 44 years at General Motors, being involved with the production launch of the 1966 Oldmobile Toronado through the launch and improvements of the Quad-4 engine during the mid-90's. While his office was located in Lansing, he called Dimondale his home. Upon retiring in the fall of 1995, Bob and Beverly moved to northern Michigan. Regardless of where he lived, Bob was always dreaming about automobiles and how to restore them. Having worked on everything from Ford flathead V-8s to Oldsmobile V-8 diesels, Bob could be found frequenting automotive parts stores or salvage yards. He loved to tell stories about his favorite cars, his family history, and his belief that every automobile could be repaired regardless of how many miles it had already traveled. And, like his passion for all automotive fix-it projects, Bob touched lives of others and made them believe they could "run again". He is survived by his wife, Beverly of Ellsworth; sons, Robert E. (Ann) Mau, Jr. of Ortonville, Joseph Mau of Blaine, Minn.; daughter, Susan Mau of Dimondale; sister, Audrey (Charles) Olschefski of Livonia, and grandsons Gabriel and Abraham. Memorial service will be at 1pm Friday, December 11th at the First Baptist Church in Charlevoix, Michigan, the Reverend David Behling officiating. Military honors will be presented by the Charlevoix Area Veterans. A Lansing area service will be held Friday, Dec 18, 11:00 AM at Trinity Church in Lansing. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to First Baptist Church, Charlevoix, MI. Please visit Robert's guestbook at www.winchesterfuneralhome.com
