ROBERT H. MALTBY, 90, of Traverse City, passed away on August 17, 2013 at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire, MI. Bob was born on December 5, 1922 in Bellaire, the son of Harold and Doris (Bedell) Maltby. Bob was a graduate of Bellaire High School then went on to attend Michigan State University. The hallmark of his life was service to others. Bob served during World War II in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a flight instructor. He also piloted the B-17 and B-29 bombers, then went on to retire as a Major, from the U.S. Air Force Reserves after 20 years of service. He was Liaison Officer several years for the U.S. Air Force Academy. He was a District Executive for the Boy Scouts of America in Illinois and Michigan. During this time he served as Director of the district camps. Bob also was a business owner in Pinckneyville, IL. He enjoyed many outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, canoeing, and camping. While camping, he was active with the Airstream International Club. On March 13, 1944, in Marianna, Fla., he married Kleo M. Sleder who survives. Also surviving are 6 children, Hon. Richard Terry (Nancy) Maltby of Marlette, MI. and Branson, MO., Suzanne Ring of Rock Island, IL., James (Paula) Maltby of Bellaire, Rebecca (Terry) Patton of O'Fallon, IL., Mark Maltby of San Diego, CA., Gary (Lori) Maltby of Rochester, IL., a daughter-in-law Barbara Grube of Bellaire, a sister Sandra Barger of Richland, Wash., 19 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son Robert Maltby II, 2 brothers, Gerald and Scott Maltby and his parents. Funeral services will take place on Wednesday, August 21 at 11:00 a.m. at the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Pastor Peggy Boltz will officiate. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 4-7 p.m. also at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
