On July 18th my brother Bob passed away after a horrendous battle with cancer. Bob was born December 23, 1949 in Watertown, NY and when he was 3, we moved to the east side of Detroit. Bob was his own person and did what he wanted to do, there are stories of him being involved in the developing music business in the Detroit area, as a “roadie”. One of those stories was a party in my parent's basement while they were away, this party was said to include people like Bob Seger and Glenn Frey. After graduation from high school Bob moved north to Bellaire and spent a few years in the late 60’s early 70’s as a pro ski patrol at the new ski resort Schuss Mountain. After that he got into the oils well business working in Michigan, Montana, and New Mexico with a team mainly from the Mancelona area. While in New Mexico he spent the winters teaching skiing at Telluride Resort in Colorado where he gave lessons to a famous Hollywood starlet, Susan St James. When he returned to Michigan he taught skiing at Schuss Mountain for many years, making the Slush Cup a popular and rowdy event through his work with ski clubs and his exciting commentaries. During this time he also got to race in a pro ski race at Boyne Mountain covered by ABC’s Wide World of Sports. He also spent a few years working and teaching skiing at Nub’s Nob where he got much support from the owner Dorie Sarns. In the off season Bob worked an accomplished carpenter building many homes in our area.
Bob is survived by his son Shane, his four granddaughters, Emma, Reagan, Sydney, and Madison, a stepdaughter Cortni Borgerson, his sister Karen Davis, and brother Larry Murton.
Per his wishes there will be no funeral or services, so if you were a friend or coworker please give some positive thoughts.
Arrangements are in the care of the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Please sign his online guestbook www.mortensenfuneralhomes.com.
