Robert Baker, 85, of Charlevoix, died Friday, June 17, 2016, at Munson Healthcare Charlevoix Hospital.
He was born on September 4, 1930, in Detroit, Michigan, the son of George and Julia (Smolski) Baker.
He married Bernice Tart on August 28, 1959, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Robert first served his country in the United States Army as a Paratrooper and later service many years in the United States Coast Guard for a total of 20 years.
Through his travels in the military, he enjoyed spending time with his family and showing them the world. He was a multifaceted humorous man who would do anything for anyone in need. He was known as “Grandpa” to many people. He enjoyed giving himself to others.
Robert was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, American Legion Post #226 in Charlevoix, and the Knights of Columbus. He also had captained the Ironton Ferry.
He is survived by his wife, Bernice Baker of Charlevoix; daughter, Mary Jo McFalls of Charlevoix; son, James Baker of Charlevoix; four grandchildren, Scott (Stephanie Fels) McFalls of Charlevoix, Brooke (Dave) Baker of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Ellie (Christopher) Levens of Okinawa, Japan, and Christian McFalls of Charlevoix; great grandchildren, Paisley McFalls, Brayden Russell and Gabriel Levens; niece, Michelle (Paul) Kwiatkowski Davis; a great niece Alex Davis; and a great nephew, Jordan Davis.
The funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, June 22, 2016 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Mary Catholic Church in Charlevoix. Military honors will follow at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in Charlevoix.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the Winchester Funeral Home in Charlevoix with a rosary service at 7:30 P.M. Condolences may be given at www.winchesterfuneralhome.com.
