Phyllis Gates

Phyllis J. Gates, 84, of Traverse City, formerly of Alba, passed away on January 25, 2015 at her daughter's home surrounded by her loving family. Phyllis was born at Wildcat Corners in Hayes Township, Otsego County, MI, the daughter of Peter and Mildred (Schlemmer)Babcock. Phyllis was a long time resident of Alba where she was co-owner with her husband and son of Gates' Egg Farm for many years. While living in Alba, she spent many years as 4-H leader for Antrim County. In 1988, she moved to Traverse City where she became an active member of the Traverse Bay United Methodist Church. Through the years at the church she donated many handcrafted items. Phyllis enjoyed sewing, crocheting and needlework. Her love of traveling took her throughout the United States, including Alaska, as well as other countries. She is survived by 4 children, Treva Kelts of Alba, Dale (Ramona) Gates of Alba, Ellen (Jerry) Cook of Mancelona, Ann Gates of Traverse City, a brother Peter (Helen) Babcock of MO, 5 grandchildren, Aaron (Diana) Kelts and their son Leland, Andrew (Lidoinet) Cook, Amelia Cook, David Cook, Rebekah Cook, 4 step-grandchildren, Isaac (Barbara) Smith, Ernie (Tracy) Smith, Noah (Kris) Smith, Neoma Bode, 9 step-great-grandchildren, 1 step-geat-great-granddaughter, many nieces and nephews and her close friends, the Leggett family. She was preceded in death by her husband Leland as well as her parents. Funeral services will take place on Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at the Traverse Bay United Methodist Church, 1200 Ramsdell St., Traverse City, MI, 49684. Pastor Jane Lippert will officiate. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until the time of services at the church. Interment will be in Star Township Cemetery in Alba in the spring.
