Percy Anderson Jr (Chief), 82 and a lifelong resident of Elk Rapids died suddenly June 21, 2016 due to injuries sustained in a car accident. Chief was born April 16, 1934 in Elk Rapids the son of Percy and Louisa (Williams) Anderson and proudly graduated from Elk Rapids High School with the class of 1952. Percy served 7 1/2 years in the United States Air Force last ranked as a Staff Sergeant. Upon returning home he worked many years at the Morrison Lumber Yard. He was a member of the Kewadin Indian Mission Church and also a member of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians where he served as a tribal council member and was on the Elders Advisory board. Percy was a proud member of the Elk Rapids AmVets Post 114 and also the Eagle Town Post 120. Chief enjoyed playing euchre and watching westerns. He also enjoyed watching all sports, especially his Detroit Tigers, win or lose. He enjoyed attending sporting events with his friend and longtime buddy Jim Dyke. Surviving are his children Kelly (Roger) Given, Kathleen (Darrell) Calloway, and Kerry (Sue) Wood. He is also survived by sister in law Audry Anderson as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings Gerald, Florine, Robert, Steven, Russell, Edward, Albert, David, his nephews Michael and Marty Shananaquet, niece Mary Lynn Anderson, great niece Monica Anderson. Visitation will take place Thursday, June 23, at 6 p.m. at his niece Theresa Shananaquet's home, 6805 Cairn Hwy, Kewadin. A wake service will be held Thursday and Friday at 7:00 pm. The funeral service will take place Saturday, June 25 at 1pm at the Indian Kewadin Mission Church Tabernacle. Burial will follow in the Kewadin Indian Mission Cemetery. Memorial donations can be made to the Kewadin Indian Mission Church. Arrangements have been made by the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.
