Paloma Lucille Tompkins was called home to the Lord on March 26, 2016. Paloma was born on March 4th 1927 to George and Marie Phillips in Dalton Township, Muskegon County. She worked at the State Hospital in Traverse City until it closed and then worked at the State Hospital in Kalamazoo until she retired. She was known fondly as "Lucy or Grandma Lucy" to her friends and family. Her love for her family went above and beyond. She was a great story teller and had a wonderful sense of humor. She was a gentle woman who always had a smile and a kind word for everyone she came in contact with. She was first and foremost a Christian and devoted to her Lord and Savior. She was a member of the Elk Rapids Bible Church for many years. She taught Sunday school, bible school, planned funeral luncheons and the Sunday meals. Her interest were many. She enjoyed reading and loved to travel. She traveled to Israel, Germany, France, Prince Edward Island and across the United States. She loved music. She played piano, organ, accordion and guitar. Back in the 1940's you could have heard her sing and play guitar on WTCM. She continued to play until she was no longer able. She was a seamstress and over the years many family members were recipients of her quilts, etc. She also loved crocheting, embroidery, and gifted beautiful pieces to family members. She was a wonderful cook and baker. She was famous for her homemade jams, jellies, baked goods and especially her homemade cinnamon rolls and delicious fruit cakes. Paloma was preceded in death by her parents, George and Marie Phillips, (five sisters) Teda Kapp, Rose Arias, Marjorie, June and Creda Phillips. Her eldest son Timothy C. Tompkins and two of her grandchildren, Casper MacKenzie Rehkopf and Erinn Amanda Tompkins. Surviving Family - Her Brother George (Joann) Phillips of Traverse City, Michigan and Sister Marvel Phillips of Kalkaska, Michigan. Immediate Surviving Family - Daughter-in-Law Patricia Tompkins of Lake Leelanau, Michigan, Tina Rehkopf of Long Pine, Nebraska, Teresa (Jim) Miley of Bellaire, Michigan, Tanda Rogers of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Terry (Lana) Tompkins of Stryker, Ohio, Trudy (Pablo) Martinez of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Thomas (Bonita) Tompkins of Rapid City, Michigan, Theodore (Rhonda) Tompkins of Yucaipa, California and Tamara (Jerry) Harper of York, South Carolina. Also survived by 22 Grandchildren and 26 Great Grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Mon.Mar.28th at 4pm at the Elk Rapids Bible Church with Pastor Gary Gladfelter officiating. Visitation will begin at 2pm at the church. Interment will be in OakWood Cemetary, Traverse City Michigan. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to Elk Rapids Bible Church or Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility.
