Nancy Gaylord

NANCY L. (ALLEN) GAYLORD, 87, of Mancelona, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2010 at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility.

Nancy was born on Oct. 28, 1922 in Rosslyn, KY., in a one room log cabin on Cat Creek, the daughter of Rex and Henrietta (Townsend) Allen. She came to Michigan with her parents in 1927 so her father could work at the Antrim County Iron Co. in Antrim. She went on to graduate from Mancelona High School.

Nancy married Charles "Ted" Gaylord in Aug. of 1940. And to this union were born 4 children, Robert Charles (Glenda) Gaylord of Mancelona, William Allen Gaylord, Bruce DeWayne (Anna Mary) Gaylord of Irvington, KY., and Bonnie Gaylord (Douglas) Dean of Alden.

Ted and Nancy made their home on the farm just North of Mancelona, for their entire married life. Nancy loved to quilt, write poetry, research genealogy, collect bottles, collect rocks and to take a stand on any political issue she deemed relevant. She embraced and respected education and took great pride as children, grand-children and great-great-grandchildren progressed through school and onto college.

Nancy was preceded in death by her parents Rex and Henrietta, her husband Charles, one son William, one grandson Scott, her brothers Buck Allen, Jack Allen and Joe Allen and her sisters Florence Ide and Helen Smith.

In addition to her children, Bob, Bruce and Bonnie, she is survived by 4 grandchildren, Melissa Charland of Kewadin, Melanie (Scott) Thompson of Apple Valley, CA., Victoria Lee Gaylord of Manasses, VA., 2nd Lt. Charles Gaylord, USAF stationed in Texas, 6 great-grandchildren, Christopher Charland, Cuyler Charland, Caeden Charland, Oni Thompson, Olivia Thompson, Karalyne Thompson, one step granddaughter Chris Ann Hampton, 3 step-grandchildren, Billy Hampton, Sharie Hampton, Cheyenne Hampton, a brother James Allen of Maryland and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will take place on Sat., May 29 at 11:00 a.m. at the Mancelona Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services.

Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Mancelona.
