Nancy Brown

Nancy Joan Jewell Vandergriff Brown, 77, of Mancelona, died Wed. Nov. 23, 2011 at home. Nancy was born on October 31, 1934 in Richmond, MI., the daughter of Andrew and Doris (Wilson) Jewell. Nancy was a longtime resident of Mancelona and a student of Mancelona Public Schools. She was an avid Detroit Tigers fan, loved football, and the Kentucky Derby too. Nancy enjoyed playing practical jokes on everyone she knew. She also loved to garden her flowers and produce. Nancy crochetted many years. She worked 20 years for Dura Automotive and 10 years for Eagle Picher. Nancy also spent several years in the nursing field. She is survived by 3 children, Sharon (Tom) Williams, Daniel (Gloria) Vandergriff,all of Mancelona, Doris (Marvin) Day of of Gaylord, daughter in-law Fern (James) Vandergriff, 4 stepchildren, Crystal (William) Commander of Kalkaska, Penny (Robert) Shank of Ohio, Tammie Ledesma of Grayling, James (Kathy) Brown of Mancelona, a brother Robert C. Jewell of Oxford, MI., many grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, 2 great-great- grandsons and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband James Vandergriff, 2nd husband Alvin (Bud) Brown, a daughter Carolyn Kay Vandergriff, 2 sons, James and Timothy Vandergriff, 2 granddaughters, Crystal Vandergriff and Doris "D.D." Day, as well as a brother James Jewell and a sister-in-law Lucia Jewell. Funeral services will be held Sat. Nov. 26, 2011, at 1 p.m. at the Mancelona Free Methodist Church with Reverends Andrew Day (grandson)and Gerald Cook officiating. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Mancelona. The family will receive friends Fri. Nov. 25, from 11 - 2 and 4 to 8 at the Mancelona Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. They will also receive friends from 11 am until the time of service at 1:00 p.m. Sat. Nov. 26th, at the church. Memorial donations may be made to the family.
