Today we celebrate the life of Mary Margaret Isabelle Bass, loving wife, mother, god-mother, aunt and friend to many. She went to be with the Lord March 11, 2016. Known by most as Muggs Bass, she was the daughter of Frank and Nellie O’Donnell and sister to Charlie, Richie, Ronnie, Beverly and Carol-Ann. She is survived by her loving husband Bob Bass to whom she was married for 48 years, four children, 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; in addition to her sisters and spouses Bev and Gary Cantwell, Carol and Doug Bunting, and brother, Richie. Doug and Gary we’re known to poke fun with Muggs often and each claims to be the favorite brother-in-law. The family declined to comment in regards to the claim. Were we to mention all of her nieces, nephews, God-children (Brenda Vistain, Colleen Sellers, Amy Uhll and Pam Grasskmick), cousins and friends, we’d have to add additional pages. Suffice it to say she was loved by more than many. She will be most remembered for her great Catholic faith in Jesus Christ. She sang and prayed for countless people during the hours of 3-4AM. She was also known to hold vigils by candlelight with her sisters, daughter-in-law and nieces before heading to town.
She desired to share this anonymous Irish Blessing:
“I wish you not a path devoid of clouds, nor a life on a bed of roses. Not that you might never need regret, nor that you should never feel pain, No, that is not my wish for you.
My wish for you is: That you might be brave in times of trial, When others lay crosses upon your shoulders. When mountains must be climbed, And chasms are to be crossed, When hope can scarce shine through. That every gift God gave you might grow along with you. And let you give your gift of joy to all who care for you.
That you may always have a friend who is worth that name. Whom you can trust, And who helps you in times of sadness, Who will defy the storms of daily life at your side.
One more wish I have for you: That in every hour of joy and pain you may feel God close to you. This is my wish for you and for all who care for you, Now and forever.”
And Muggs put this final touch on the blessing: “Now go hit the Pub and get over it.”
Vigil Service will be from 6-7pm, Friday, May 13, at Holy Cross Catholic Church on Beaver Island. Funeral Mass will be 11am, Saturday, May 14, at Holy Cross Church.
