Michael F. Shananaquet Sr., 57, of Traverse City, passed away Sun. Sept. 30, at Munson Medical Center surrounded by his family. He was born April 30, 1955 in Elk Rapids, the son of Francis and Florine (Anderson) Shananaquet. Mike was a 1973 graduate of Elk Rapids High School and after several years moved to Traverse City. He owned his own construction business and worked for several other contractors. He was a former Tribal Counselor and member of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians. He was also a member of the Kewadin Indian Mission Church. Mike enjoyed bowling, softball and golf. He also loved fishing and hunting. On June 6, 1981, in Kewadin he married Shirley Houser who survives. Also surviving are children and grandchildren Shannon Rouch, Brandy Shananaquet and Shakita, Misheka Floyd and Misheka, Sandra, Anna Nakisha and Alydia, Michael (Dawn) Shananaquet Jr. and Essence (Egg), Logan (Loags), Mikenzey (Kz), Keegan (Spud), Clara (Weezy) Shananaquet and Tristen (Bub), Alicia (Chicky) Shananaquet and Gabriel (Buzz), sisters Theresa Shananaquet, Mary (Earl) Pelcher, Patricia (Bobby) Poertner, Melissa Alberts, brother Wilmer Alberts, uncles Percy and Robert Anderson, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Martin Shananaquet. Funeral services will be held Thurs. Oct. 4, at 1 pm at the Kewadin Indian Mission Church. Interment will follow in Kewadin Indian Mission Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tues. Oct. 2, starting at 1 pm at sister Theresa's house 6805 Cairn Hwy, Kewadin. Memorials may be directed to the Kewadin Indian Mission Church. Arrangements have been handled by the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.
