Maurice R. Schmidt, 95, of Bellaire, passed away on June 1, 2014 at Munson Hospice House. Maurice was born on June 16, 1918, in Grand Rapids, MI, the son of G.H. Karl and Minnie (Ringold) Schmidt. Maurice was employed by General Motors as a power plant boiler engineer at the new diesel equipment GM Plant in Grand Rapids for 30 years before retiring in 1976 then moving to Eastport. He served during World War II as a member of the United States Merchant Marines. Maurice enjoyed music, telling stories, reading, growing flowers, and visiting family and friends. Maurice was a faithfull member of the Bellaire Wesleyan Church. Surviving Maurice are his children Pat (Irvin) Winkle of Prescott, Sam Schmidt of Grand Rapids, Kim (Laura) Schmidt of Eastport, 4 step- children, Charles (Connie) Bartsch, David (Andrea) Bartsch, Christine (Jurgen) Adam, Cheryl Owen, one sister Pokey (Roger) DeGraff of Holland, 7 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife Alice, son Mike, second wife Dorothy, 5 brothers, 3 sisters. Funeral services will be held Thurs. June 5, 2014 at 11 a.m. at the Bellaire Wesleyan Church with Pastor Steve Eccles officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in Lakeview Cemetery, Torch Lake Township. The family will receive friends Wed. June 4, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Memorial contributions may be made to Munson Hospice House or Hope Village in Williamsburg. Arrangements are being handled by the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.
