Mary Janice Smith, 81, of Traverse City, passed away on Sunday, January 17 at the Munson Hospice House. She was born on July 5, 1939 in Manistee, MI, the daughter of Thomas and Sigrid (Hansen) Wheeler.
Mary devoted her life to raising her children; her greatest joy in life was spending time with them, her grandchildren, and her great grandchildren. She also enjoyed putting jigsaw puzzles together and could often be found in the community room of her apartment building working on one with friends. Mary loved country music and was able to go on bus tours with a friend and meet many of her favorite singers.
Mary is survived by six children, Lynn Mohr of Kentwood, Jim Mang II of Traverse City, Laura Williams of Ionia, Tom Mang of Traverse City, Michelle (Bob) Englebrecht of Central Lake, and Kristine Smith of Fife Lake; her brother, Gerald (Dorothy) Wheeler of Stevensville; her sister, Marion Landenberg of West Point, GA; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, James Mang; her second husband, Joseph Smith; four brothers, Jean Wheeler, Howard Wheeler, Sonny Wheeler, and Thomas McKinley jr.; and three sisters, Mildred Harrington, Marguerite Wemple, and Baby Marie Wheeler.
A graveside service will be held in the spring of 2021.
