Mary Jacqueline "Jackie" Meier

Mary Jacqueline “Jackie” Meier, 96, of Charlevoix, passed away peacefully on April 18, 2023, at the American House in Charlevoix.  She was born on November 28, 1926, in Cleveland, OH, the daughter of John and Mary (Kolar) Lucas.

Jackie was raised in Bedford, OH, and graduated from Beaumont High School in Cleveland.  She attended Ursuline College in Ohio for several semesters, and went on to finish her undergraduate studies at the University of Miami while living with grandma Kolar.  In 1948, she moved to Charlevoix where she worked for her cousin, Polly Haggard, at Polly Kay’s Dress Shop, as well as babysit her children. Later that same year, she married Charles “Chuck” Meier on November 25^th at St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church in Cleveland. 

They returned to Charlevoix where Jackie worked as a waitress at the Argonne for several years.  She and Chuck were the caretakers of Mt. McSauba from the early 1960’s to the late 1970’s.  She often held bake sales in town to raise funds for the operations of the mountain.  Eventually, she began teaching 4^th grade at Charlevoix Elementary School, and returned to college to obtain her Master’s Degree in teaching from Michigan State University.  She retired after 32 years. 

Upon retirement, they enjoyed many years wintering to their condo in San Destin, Florida.  Jackie was an active member at St. Mary’s Catholic Church and a big part of the little flower guild.  In her free time, she enjoyed reading, gardening, and quilting.

Jackie is survived by four children, Charles “Corky” (Sue) Meier Jr. of Charlevoix, Cheryl (Robert Lynn) Oakes of Doylestown, Pennsylvania, Mark Meier of East Jordan, Timothy (Kathy) Meier of Pensacola, Florida; her brother, John (Judy) Lucas of Charlevoix; her sister, Barbara Gleason of FL; 14 grandchildren; and many great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Charles “Chuck” Meier; her son, Michael Meier; and her sister, Jeanette Moran.
