Mary Ellen Carlson

Mary Ellen Carlson of Central Lake passed away March 31 at the age of 84 at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire. She was born in Muskegon to Harry and Nora (Mullally) Carlson and was raised in Whitehall, Michigan with her brother Robert (Bob).

She graduated from Muskegon Catholic Central class of 1957 where her musical and baton twirling talents flourished as lead majorette in the school’s marching band. She was a very accomplished pianist and was always ready to entertain a group of family and friends. She was a devoutly religious person with thoughts in her younger years of becoming a Catholic nun. Her praying the rosary daily and attending Mass at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Bellaire were sources of great strength and joy.

She was preceded to her heavenly home by her parents, Harry and Nora and brother Bob Carlson. She will be remembered by her nieces and nephews, children of Bob and wife, Patricia (Secord) Carlson: Suzanne (Ernest) Heikkila, Chris Carlson, Mike (Katy) Carlson, Andy (Erin) Carlson and Mary Theresa (Geoffory) Sponn. Cousins are left with many fun family reunions memories. Children of: Martin Mullally - James, John and Neil; John P Mullally - especially Sr. Ellen Mullally, CSJ; Walt and Eileen Doppel - Donald Doppel; Byron and Josephine Oliver - John J Oliver, Pat Wagner and Sally Wojtowicz.

The family offers sincere thanks to the Simonson family of Central Lake for providing a loving home for Mary for over Forty years and to her guardian Sheri for supplying all her needs. Lifetime friend, Norma Jean, though living away at a great distance, stayed in touch with Mary to bolster her spirits.

Prayers and special thanks to the parishioners of St Luke’s, Mary’s spiritual home and to Rev James R. Swiat for celebrating our farewell Mass for Mary Ellen Carlson.

A funeral mass will take place at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 13, 2023, at St. Luke's Catholic Church in Bellaire with Fr. James Swiat officiating. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of mass at noon. Burial will take place at a later date in the family plot at St. James Mount Calvary Cemetery, Montague, MI.

Memorial contributions may be given to St. Luke’s Catholic Church, Bellaire, MI.
