PETOSKEY- Marvin James “Jim” Elzinga, 88, died Friday, June 21st, in Petoskey. He was born December 9th, 1935, in Ellsworth, the son of Marvin and Isabel Elzinga. He graduated from Ellsworth high school in 1952 and subsequently received a degree in accounting from Michigan State in 1956.
Jim Elzinga was defined by his career as an accountant, wedding photographer, and runner. Though he retired as an accountant from the State of Michigan in 1988, he continued to loyally serve businesses and private clients, with some accounts being maintained for over 50-years and across generations, a testament to Jim’s integrity and loyalty.
As a wedding photographer, Jim’s patience and attention to detail were put to work in 550 weddings. Jim was fascinated by family lineage and history, which he bore witness to by taking the wedding photos of multiple generations.
Nothing defined Jim more than his love for running. Jim was tireless in his efforts to build an active running community in northern Michigan, for which the region has benefitted from his efforts to make the sport more inclusive to runners of all ages. As an astute keeper of records and journals, Jim’s passion for accounting and running found their nexus in 2012 when he crossed the threshold of 40,000 miles of recorded running.
Jim was always a fierce competitor. At the age of 76 he ran 41 road races, winning his age group in 39 competitions. Jim was a northern Michigan running legend, whose camaraderie and supportive presence at local races will be missed.
Jim met his wife Linda Halford in 2007. The couple were active members of the Petoskey community, always eager to help those in need and support philanthropic initiatives. Jim and Linda enjoyed time spent traveling in their RoadTrek van and embarking on various cruises throughout the hemisphere. The pair were a perfect match, who cherished their happy hour rituals and time spent enjoying the beauty of northern Michigan.
Jim passed away at his home, in the caring and loving presence of his wife and daughter, Dr. Wendy (Elzinga) (Dr. Daniel Thomas) Thomas. Jim also leaves behind his Brothers Steven (Nancy) Elzinga of Lambertville and Terry “Chief” (Young) Elzinga of South Korea; two grandchildren Brendon (Karalea Davis) Thomas and Dr. Emily (Dr. Dennis Barbon) Thomas, and numerous beloved nephews and nieces.
