Marguerite Stokes, 103, of East Jordan, died on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 22, 2012 at her home, the same address where she was born.
She was born October 1, 1909 in South Arm Township, the daughter of Samuel E. and Maggie Ann (Waggoner) Rogers.
She graduated from East Jordan High School in 1926. She took two years of college at Central State Teachers College in Mt. Pleasant for a teaching certificate. She had skipped some grades in school and got her first pay check before she was 19. She received her bachelor's degree from Central Michigan University in the early 1950's. Then in 1964 she obtained her Master of Arts degree from Michigan State University.
On June 22, 1935 she and Donald Stokes eloped to Indiana to be married. They made their last home in Flint, Michigan before moving back to the Rogers' Family Homestead outside of East Jordan in 1945. Donald died in 1979.
Marguerite taught school in Elk Rapids, Lansing, Jackson, and 28 years in East Jordan. She was a member of the East Jordan United Methodist Church.
She enjoyed bird watching and reading. In her 100th year she completed a history of the
Rogers homestead called "Sam's Homestead" which can be found at www.lulu.com by typing in "Sam's Homestead Stokes".
Surviving are her daughter Carolyn Ashley of East Jordan and son Roger (Mary) Stokes of St. John, Indiana; 6 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; and her brother Forrest Samuel (Phyllis) Rogers of Morganton, North Carolina.
