Margaret Mary Hopper, 99, of Bellaire, died peacefully at home, Tues. Feb. 4, 2014. She was born Oct. 17, 1914, in Bangor, Maine the daughter of John and Mary (Devala) Seman. Growing up in a poor family non-English speaking family, Margaret was determined to learn English and educate herself. She learned to read at the age of 6, opening up a whole new world for her. Margaret was a lifelong avid reader who read an average of 7 books a month all thru the years. Margaret moved to northern Michigan to live with her daughter and son in-law after spending 20 years in Florida. She became a member of St. Luke Catholic Church, and the members became her extended family. She was loved by all who knew her. Surviving Margaret are her daughter and son in-law Arline and Vince Messano, grandson Gary V. Messano, daughter in-law Claire Sislak, grandsons Joel R. and Christopher Sislak, and great grandchildren Kiera, Kyle, and Jered. She was preceded in death by her 1st husband of 24 years, Joseph Sislak, and 2nd husband of 36 years, Dr. Alexander Hopper. She was also preceded in death by her son Jerry Richard Sislak, brother John Seman, and sister Agnes Scarpa. A funeral mass will be held Mon. Feb. 10, 2014, at 11 a.m. at St. Luke Catholic Church with Fr. James Gardiner officiating. The family will receive friends Sun. Feb. 9, from 5 to 7 p.m. with a rosary being held at 7 p.m. The family will also receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Monday.
