Manuel (Max) Griffis, 88, of Bellaire, formerly of Kewadin, passed away on March 12, 2016 at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility. Max was born on June 19, 1927, in Lakeview, MI, the son of Carmie and Lillie (Johnson) Griffis. Max grew up on the family farm north of Six Lakes, MI. At age 17, Max enlisted in the U.S. Army and served his country in WWII where he was stationed in Okinawa. After the war he returned to his home town, obtained employment at General Electric and was wed to Joyce Miller. Two children, David and Jackie were born to this union. After 11 years the marriage ended. Several years later Max met Donna Nisonger and they were married on Jan. 19, 1963. Two children, Richard and Perry were born to this union. The family moved to Elk Rapids in 1967 and Max began a new career as a carpenter. He became involved as a little league coach and spent much of his free time behind the power damn fishing for trout. He also enjoyed searching for morel mushrooms and picking blackberries with his family. He followed his boys high school sports events and attended several college games. After raising their children, Max and Donna enjoyed visits from their grandchildren and Max could often be seen pushing Mitch and Megan in the tire swing in the front lawn. He also enjoyed grilling his famous paprika chicken on the BBQ for the kids. Max and Donna became inseperable and could often be seen together on daily drives searching the countryside for deer and turkey. Max is survived by 4 children, David Miller, Jackie (Grady) Rowe, Rich (Gina) Griffis, Perry (Marilyn) Griffis, 9 grandchildren, Jessica, Grady Ross, Jared, Luke, Gabriel, Rachael, Jacob, Megan and Mitchell. Also surviving are two brothers, Chester Griffis, George (Alma) Griffis, a sister Arlene. He was preceded in death by his wife Donna, a brother Creton Griffis, three sisters, Arleta, Irma and Jackie as well as his parents. Memorial services, with military honors, will take place on Thursday, March 17, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at the Central Lake Bible Baptist Church with Pastor Russell Tharp officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Central Lake Bible Baptist Church. Arrangements are being handled by the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.
