Louis Shafer

Louis E. Shafer, 85, of Traverse City, formerly of Lansing, Bellaire, and Mason, died peacefully, Monday, April 20, 2015 at Munson Hospice House surrounded by his three youngest children. He was born January 16, 1930, in Lansing, the son of Russell J. and LoDema N. (Welch) Shafer. Louie proudly served in the US Army during the Korean War. Before and after his service he worked for General Motors in Lansing, retiring after 34 A½ years of dedicated service in the auto mechanic industry. Louie loved to volunteer and serve others. He did so with many groups throughout Antrim County, including the Bible Baptist Church as an usher, putting together mailings for the Senior Center in Bellaire, snow blowing and performing odd jobs for those less fortunate. In his spare time he enjoyed building and woodworking, making many shadow boxes and spoon racks along the way. On May 29, 1955, in Bellaire, he married the love of his life, Nancy Joyce Flaugher, who preceded him in death in 1998. Also preceding him were his parents and his siblings James R., Robert B., Richard E., and Mary E. He is survived by his children RoxAnne Shafer of Traverse City, Nancylee (Randy) Buck of Mason, Randy Shafer of Sacramento, CA, and Kerry Shafer of Lansing, 3 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren with 1 on the way. His eldest great grandson is graduating this May from Mason High School. Funeral services, with grandson inlaw Dylan Peyton officiating, will be held Friday, April 24, at 2 p.m. at the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes with the family receiving friends from 1p.m. until the time of service. Interment with Military Honors will follow immediately, in Southern Cemetery, Central Lake. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Munson Hospice House, Munson Dialysis Center, or the American Cancer Society, in memory of Louie and/or Nancy Shafer.
