Lorna Mae Lewis passed away Saturday November 19, 2016 at McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey after a short illness. She was born in Charlevoix to Oral and Lola (Hinshaw) Lewis on September 2, 1932. She graduated from Charlevoix High School in 1950, and followed her dream to become a Registered Nurse by graduating in 1953 from Grace Hospital School of Nursing in Detroit, continuing her career in Florida, Washington, and California. In 1970 Lorna accepted the challenge of living in Taiwan where she worked 3 years in a Christian missionary school. She then joined a friend who was running an orphanage in Mindanao, Philippines where she spent seven years managing U.S. adoptions, serving as principal of a K-12 school, and setting up well-baby clinics in the barrios. In 1980 Lorna returned to California, taking a job at Asuza Pacific University as a student health nurse, then as director of counseling. While there she earned Master Degrees in Human Resource Development and Marriage and Family Counseling.
Retirement brought her back home to Charlevoix and to her family in 1996. She was a faithful member of the First Congregational Church of Charlevoix and the Philanthropic Educational Organization Sisterhood of Northern Michigan. Lorna never married but she had a special love for her extended family.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Russell Lewis and Jim Lewis; brother-in-law, Eugene Bergmann; and sister-in-law, Karen (Smith) Lewis, all of Charlevoix. She is survived by sisters, Maxine Bergmann of Charlevoix, and Beth (Tony) Mulac of Traverse City; sister-in-law, Lois Lewis of Charlevoix; and many much loved nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held December 3rd at 3:00 pm at the First Congregational Church of Charlevoix. Interment will be in the Brookside Cemetery of Charlevoix.
