Lois Ann MacGregor of Elk Rapids, Michigan
passed away peacefully in the early hours of Monday,
October 10, 2022. She was 88 years old.
Lois was born in Chicago, Illinois on Friday, July
13, 1934 to parents George and Marion Streit. She
grew deep roots in Michigan after her father, George,
moved the family there when his job transferred him
to Royal Oak, Michigan. She met the love of her life,
Thomas MacGregor, when she was 13 years old, and
later married him when she was 21 years old. They
moved around Michigan and had five children in 67
years of marriage.
After the kids were grown, Lois took a job at Pontiac General as a Pharmacy tech
until they moved to the Elk Rapids area where she and her husband purchased and
ran a coin operated laundry/dry cleaning service in Traverse City. Lois’s parents and
siblings were also living in Elk Rapids and gave her the comfort of family in a small
community. She took an active role in their church, Sacred Heart, by volunteering
with funeral hospitality. Lois was an excellent cook, able to cook for large groups and
her abilities to provide for others came from being a mom of five kids. She would get
the call and immediately make a dish for grieving families to share. She had quite a
few requested recipes.
Lois volunteered for many years at Father Fred’s Food Bank in Traverse City and
met long lasting good friends there until she retired for health reasons. She also acquired
her lifelong dream of becoming a master gardener and it showed in her gardens.
She could strike up a conversation with anyone and could light up a room with
her large personality. Her big heart, sense of humor and quiet, loving demeanor will be
forever missed by all who knew her. Lois had good advice for those who would listen.
Grandma Lois cherished spending time with her family, especially her
grandchildren and nieces and nephews. All the grandchildren knew about the basket
of old toys in the living room. It’s the first place they would go when they visited.
Lois was preceded in death by her son, Peter MacGregor (Lisa Amato MacGregor)
and is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, Thomas A. MacGregor; daughters,
Cari (Mark) Jacob, Bonni (Steve) Rice, Julie (Denny) Weber, and Sara MacGregor.
Grandchildren, Cody Sonnenberg, Ty and Lukas Jacob (Eva), Alison Rice Granger
(Trevor), Megan Chapman (Ryan), Kelsey MacGregor Greenberg (Lucas), and
Kristen Lapan (Charlie). Great grandchildren, Corbin Sonnenberg, Brinley and
Grayson Granger, Ryder MacGregor, Hunter Chapman, as well as numerous nieces
and nephews, dear friends and extended family members.
