Leon Holda, 93, of Rapid River Township, Kalkaska County, passed away on November 25, 2014 at Grand Traverse Pavilions. Leon was born in Thorpe, Wisconsin to Michael and Margaret Holda (Polish Immigrants), the 8th child out of 10. The family farmed land throughout North Central Michigan until Leon moved to Detroit to work with his brother for George Odien Construction. He joined the U.S. Army in 1942 and entered the European Theater. He strung wire in fox holes in combat areas and set up switchboards. He was honorably discharged in 1946 and received several decorations. Leon was proud of his service to his country. He was devoted to the American Flag. He married Edith Willnow of Adrian, MI on January 29, 1949 who preceded him in death in 1987. They had a daughter Nancy Louise Holda Weaks (Craig) who survive. He is also survived by his youngest sister Eleanor Delisle and many nieces and nephews. He became a lay minister and devoted his life to Jesus Christ. Leon was an opinionated man with a strong work ethic. Unfortunately, he had a spinal injury that kept him from working construction. He never stopped "Putzing" around the house and could fix just about anything he put his mind to. He loved people to smile, especially his "Little ones". Special thanks to the staff at Grand Traverse Pavilions (Dogwood), in Traverse City, for their care and concern. Cremation has taken place through the Mancelona Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. He will be buried at Fort Custer National Cemetery, in Battle Creek, with full military honors, at a date to be named later. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, www.stjude.org.
