Leo Nothstine

Professor Leo V. Nothstine, of Mancelona, Michigan, passed away on October 29th, 2013 at the age of 97 years, two months and 10 days. Leo Nothstine was born on August 19, 1916 in Mancelona, MI to the late Ray M. and Wilma (Johnson) Nothstine both of Mancelona, MI. He married Laura Florence Bartholow of Coffeyville, Kansas on June 7, 1941. Leo Nothstine graduated from Mancelona High School in 1934. He studied Civil Engineering at Michigan State University and graduated in 1938. He studied for his Master's Degree in Steel and Concrete construction at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas, where he met his wife Laura Florence Bartholow. He taught briefly at Texas Tech, worked for Martin Aircraft in Baltimore MD, and Ford Consolidated Aircraft at Willow Run designing B-24 modifications during WWII. Following the War he worked for Gould Engineering in Grand Blanc, MI, and then signed on as a professor of Civil Engineering and Land Surveying at Michigan State University in East Lansing, MI where he remained for 35 years until he retired in 1981. Leo and Florence moved to their summer home at Big Twin Lake near Mancelona, MI and wintered in Bonita Springs and Naples, FL, and traveled to visit their children and grand children near home and in far corners of the world. Leo's first wife Florence died July 21, 1991 at Big Twin Lake. In 1992 he married Rebecca (Mavety) Thompkins, a high school friend from Mancelona, and was married to her for 18 years. She died on Oct 31, 2010 in Naples FL. Leo Nothstine is survived by his sister Thelma "Molly" (Nothstine) Kresnak of Bellaire, MI, his brother Jack R Nothstine and sister-in-law Zelda (Kuhn) Nothstine of Naples, FL, his four children, Thomas Nothstine and daughter-in-law Marja (Bohling) of Mt. Pleasant, MI, William Nothstine of Mancelona, MI, Charles Nothstine and daughter-in-law Cynthya (Gentry) Nothstine of Williamsburg, VA, and James Nothstine and daughter-in-law Mary (Lusk) Nothstine of Mancelona, MI. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Krista (Nothstine) King and her husband Josh King, Kurt Nothstine and his wife Christine (McKinnon) Nothstine, Kyle Nothstine and his wife Brandy (Mack) Nothstine, Kent Nothstine, Douglas Nothstine and his wife Heather (Canada) Nothstine, Jack Nothstine and his wife Jenny (Anderson) Nothstine, Ray Nothstine and Chris Nothstine and his wife Lisa (Lawton) Nothstine. He is also the great-grand father of Amelia and Nadia King; and Leo, Marla, and Zelda; and Sara and Axel; and Jacob and Leah; and Gwyneth and AAABarrett; and Evelyn and Charlotte all Nothstines; and step great-grandfather to Xavier King and Dakota Mack. A memorial service for Leo and Florence will be held at Pathway Community Church, 416 South Williams (US-131), Mancelona, MI on Sunday, November 3, 2013 at 2:30 p.m. The Mancelona Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes is handling the arrangements.
