Lawrence Bergmann died on August 15, 2021. He was born on February 12, 1939 in Daytona Beach, FL to the late George and Josephine Bergmann. Lawrence served his country on a Navy destroyer during Pearl Harbor. He was a cement mason most of his life and also drove school bus for Charlevoix. He also provided a loving environment for over 225 foster children that were nurtured on God’s word.
Lawrence was extremely active in his faith and he organized and fundraised an annual trip called the Colorado Challenge for hundreds of students over many years. This trip put 15 students in a van for many hours and included physical challenges including white water rafting and mountain climbing. You can imagine the opportunities to witness these kids when they are in the beauty of Colorado Rockies with no access to technology.
Lawrence is survived by his children Alan (Cinda) of The Villages, FL, Wayne (Christy) of IL, Melissa (Travis) of Boyne City; brother Steven (Sally); grandchildren Stephanie, Dylan, Katie (Brad), Jordan (Lauryn), Nick (Tiffany), Alexandrea (John), Drew (Meghan), Carley, Cody, Hazel, Tyler, Alex, and Abby; great-grandchildren Lilliana, Scottie, Ahzylei, Warryck, Blaiyzz, and Alairyk. He was preceded in death by his wife Sandra of 57 years and an infant son Larry.
Lawrence was blessed to spend his last 4 years with Shirley Gillespie. Together they found opportunities to love and live. They enjoyed travelling, camping, watching their grandchildren’s activities and supporting Charlevoix athletics.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital fund in memory of Lawrence Bergmann.
