Kenneth Lyle Rische, 67, of Atwood, Mich, formerly of McLaughlin, S.Dak, passed away Saturday, April 16, 2016, at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born at home May 12, 1948, in Campbell County, S.Dak to Oscar and Minnie (Miller) Rische and grew up on a farm in McLaughlin. Ken attended South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in Rapid City, S.Dak, where he earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He eventually went to work for Ford Motor Company in the Detroit area, retiring in 2003 to northern Michigan.
Ken enjoyed making furniture in his wood shop, helping friends and neighbors with his various handyman skills, watching sunsets over Lake Michigan, and most of all playing with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Kathy; daughters, Shannon Rische of Cadillac, Mich, Kelly Rische and her husband, David Ziegler of Wayzata, Minn; grandchildren, Colin, Sadie and Eden; brothers, Richard (Mary Ellen) Rische of Redfield, S.Dak, Clyde (Patricia) Rische of Belle Fourche S.Dak; sister, Linda Schulz of Ruma, Ill. Ken was preceded in death by his parents, and his infant brother, Dale.
A Memorial Mass will be 11AM, Wednesday, April 20, 2016, at Saint Mary's Church in Charlevoix. The Reverend Matthew A. Wigton will officiate. Inurnment will be at the Antrim City Cemetery in Banks Township, Antrim County, Michigan.
A special thank you to the nurses and aides at the Charlevoix Infusion Center and to the Hospice of Little Traverse Bay for their loving care.
Memorial contributions may be made to Saint Mary's Church for the addition of a seating and reflection area around the statue of Mary, which was designed by Ken.
