JOSEPH OMNESS

JOSEPH E. OMNESS, 56, of Mancelona, died on March 7, 2012 at his home. Joe was born on August 15, 1955 in Muskegon, MI., the son of Edward and Suzanne (Cardinal) Omness. Joe grew up in Muskegon, graduated from high school, and moved to Big Rapids to attend Ferris State University. He lived there for many years, working in banking and real estate. After purchasing Mount Mancelona and moving to Mancelona in 1998, he became very involved in community events and worked tirelessly to bring advantages to the families and children who live there, including being a charter member of the Communities in Schools organization and working to establish the Parkside Arts Council, now located in Bellaire. Known to many of his friends as "your favorite Joe", he was loved for his high spirits and fun loving personality. He wasn't above the occasional practical jokes on his friends and was the best joke and storyteller around. He enjoyed being with friends, cruising garage sales and working on the lodge at his ski slopes. The greatest joy and pride of his life was being father to his two daughters, Jenni and Katie Omness of Big Rapids. He is also survived by his parents, Edward and Suzanne Omness, of Muskegon, where he leaves behind many lifelong friends. He touched so many lives with kindness and humor, and will be missed by all who knew him. His family had a private service but will welcome friends at a celebration of his life on March 30 at Hagar's Hideaway in Muskegon beginning at 5:30, and another at his beloved lodge on May 12 at 2 p.m. Mortensen Funeral Homes will have more information on their website when more details become available. Memorial contributions to a fund for Jenni and Katie may be made in their names and sent to 3256 S. East Torch Lake Drive, Bellaire, MI 49615.
