Joseph Patrick Murdick, 65, beloved son, cherished brother, and “Uncle Joe” to many, passed away of natural causes on January 29, 2022 in his Charlevoix home. Those who knew Joe knows that he lived life on his own terms, following the road less traveled, and greeting everyone with his signature, “Hey man!” Joe’s many creative talents included candy making. A fourth-generation master candy maker in the Murdick clan, Joe worked with his father in the Murdick's candy shop in Mackinaw City for many years, where he was the proud innovator of amazing fudge flavors, including the Chocolate Chip Swirl. He was also a gifted self-taught guitarist. He enjoyed all sorts of music and was an avid reader. With his keen eye for beauty, Joe developed a passion for photography in the latter half of his life. Countless evenings, especially in the warmer months, found him on the shore of Lake Michigan, capturing images, along with their stories, which he loved to share. Joe and his stories will truly be missed.
Joe was preceded in death by his father, Francis G. Murdick, his brother-in-law, Leon Perron, and his niece, Kristi M.Brewer, all of Charlevoix. He is survived by his 92-year-old mother, Marcella (Hanselman) Murdick of Charlevoix, and his seven siblings and their spouses, John F. Murdick (Marcia) of Cheboygan, Celeste T. (Murdick) Perron of Charlevoix, Karen A. Pizzorni of Jackson MI, Kathleen A. Murdick of Charlevoix, Jerold H. Murdick (Carol Bergman) of Charlevoix, Julie L. Murdick of Charlevoix, and Rebecca M. Murdick of Bonita Springs FL and Charlevoix. Joe is also survived by nieces and nephews Carrie (Williams) Kiteley of Petoskey, Ryan Murdick (Amy Mazure) Superior CO, Aaron Murdick (Kristine Blanchard) of Cheboygan, Nichelle (Perron) Ciesielczyk (Carey) of Charlevoix, Simeon Perron of Charlevoix, Devin Brewer of Petoskey, Hanna (Pizzorni) Kunkle (Will) of Charlotte NC, and Sophia (Pizzorni) Holzclaw (Brock) of Charlotte NC, as well as many grand nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Joe’s life will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Joe’s memory to the Charlevoix County Humane Society.
