Joseph A. Canavan, 36, of Elk Rapids, died Tues. Dec. 10, 2013 as the result of an automobile accident. He was born Oct. 14, 1977 in Los Angeles, CA, the son of Dennis P. Canavan and Christine Schuler. Joe lived life to the fullest. He enjoyed working on, rebuilding, and driving fast cars and trucks. He was a proud and active member of the Fleetwood Truckers SoCal, a lowrider truck club. Joe had many friends whom he spent many hours socializing and enjoying their company. Surviving Joe are his parents, Dennis Canavan of Sun City, CA and Chris (Adam) Schuler of Elk Rapids. He is also survived by his sister Rachel (Jeff) Miller and their children Bellany, Natalia and Jason, all of Elk Rapids, and brother John (Dyana) Canavan and their children Michael and Joshua, all of Stevenson, WA. He also leaves behind an unborn child due in May. Joe was preceded in death by his grandparents and his uncle Michael Miller. A vigil will be held Fri. Dec. 13, 2013 at 6 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Elk Rapids with Fr. Robert Zuchowski officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until the time of service. A memorial service will be held Sat. Dec. 14, at 1 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Elk Rapids with Rev. Dr. Andrew Martinez officiating. The family will receive friends from 12 noon until the time of service. Memorial donations may be made to Chris Schuler or Rachel Miller for the Joseph Canavan Memorial Fund for his unborn child, c/o Alden State Bank, PO BOX 717, Elk Rapids, MI 49629.
