John J. Speigl, 83, of Charlevoix, passed away Saturday, December 5, 2015, at home with his son Ken and his dog Lewis by his side. John was born April 26, 1932, and grew up on the family farm on Burnett Road. He was the second youngest of seven siblings, born to Margaret Shotz and Jake Speigl. John attended the Murray Road School and later in life earned his GED.

In 1955, John entered the US Army and was honorably discharged in 1957. Upon leaving the Army John began working at the Penn Dixie Cement plant as a class A repairman. He worked there for 26 years until the plant closed. After that, John worked at Bond-a-Cove Manufacturing until his retirement.

On November 10, 1962, John married Mary Louise “Mary Lou” Speigl and they made their home in Charlevoix. Mary Lou preceded John in death on August 31, 2014.

John was a very kind and gentle man who never complained about anything. He could fix anything and loved woodworking. He will be greatly missed by his dog Lewis (Louie).

John is survived by his son, Ken Speigl; grandchildren Libby and Tyler Speigl; sisters-in-law, Kathy Jones and husband Earl of Sparta, Donna Lozon of Conklin, Bonnie Schoenborn of Conklin, Betty Speigl of Petoskey; brothers-in-law, Dan Simon of Bay Shore, Tom Schoenborn, Butch (Rosemary) Schoenborn, all of Marne, Bob (Pat) Schoenborn of Cedar Springs,. John is also survived by dozens of nieces and nephews from the Schoenborns, Lozons, Simons, Agers, Moores, Jones and Speigls.

John was preceded in death by his brothers, Leo, Larry and his wife Elinor, and Fred; his sisters, Clara and her husband Ted Ager, Mary Simon, and Anne Moore; brother-in-law, Emmet Schoenborn. John was also preceded in death by his best friends, Al Thier and Earl Perrault.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 am, Saturday, December 12, 2015, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Charlevoix, with the Reverend Matthew Wigton officiating. Come to the church to visit with the family beginning at 10:00 am.

I would personally like to thank Donna and Julie of Hospice of Northwest Michigan for their support. Also, a huge thanks, to his niece Janet for her card playing, compassion, and care giving during his final days.
