John W. Kirby Jr., 66 of Vanderbilt, died Wed. June 25, 2014, at Otsego Memorial Hospital. He was born in 1948 in Pontiac, the son of John Sr. and Nyla (Strandell) Kirby. John was a kind, caring person who would give the shirt off his back to help someone in need. He was self employed in the construction industry and enjoyed hunting and fishing in northern Michigan for over 50 years. John was a proud U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. Surviving John are his children Scott Kirby of Elmira, Michael (Kelly Grody) Kirby of Elmira, Kim (Tim) Sharpe of Rochester Hills, sisters Judy Burns of Ellsworth, Jill (Dennis) Wolgamott of Central Lake, Randy (Sue) Kirby of White Lake, Trini (Jon) Kelly of Ellsworth, grandchildren Lauren, Julia and Jacob Kirby, Justin Nelson, one great granddaughter, 5 nephews, 3 nieces and several great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and granddaughter Lillian Kirby. Graveside services with Military Honors will be Saturday, June 28, at 2 p.m. at Lakeview Cemetery, Torch Lake Twp. An afternoon luncheon will follow at the home of Jill and Dennis Wolgamott, 3160 NE Torch Lake Dr. Memorial donations can be directed to The Resolve Through Sharing Program c/o Munson Medical Center, 1105 Sixth Street, Traverse City, MI, 49684.
