John Jensen Sr

John (Jack) Gordon Jensen Sr., 82, passed away peacefully at his son John's home in Alden, MI, surrounded by his loving family, on Wednesday, November 19, 2008. He was born November 11, 1926, in Grand Rapids, MI, the son of Hans Peter and Ella L. (Henderson) Jensen. Jack graduated from Howe Military School, Howe, IN, in 1944. He then entered the Navy in early 1945, serving on the LCI 352 in the Philippines. After receiving the rank of QM3/c in late 1946, he was discharged. He attended Michigan State University and then went to work for United Construction Company. He became the general manager on heavy underground projects in the Midwest. Throughout his life, he was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed his sometimes recognized abilities in skiing (around the world), tennis, hunting, boating and trap and skeet shooting. During his time at Madison, WI, he secured his private pilot's license. For several years he managed the clay bird division of the Harlingen, TX, Gun Club. He was a member of the Sarasota Power Squadron. He was also a member of the Sauble Point Sail and Power Squadron in Ludington, MI, where he assisted and taught safe boating and sail. Jack enjoyed traveling France. He especially enjoyed Denmark and would often spend time with relatives from his father's side of the family. Jack is survived by his loving children, Joan Karen (Jack) Abbott of Harlingen, TX; John G. (Carol) Jensen Jr. of Alden, MI; Craig T. Jensen of Somerset, VA; and Julie Jensen of Orlando, FL; grandchildren Heather Adair, Amy Jensen, and Tim Abbott, four great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren. Also surviving are his lifelong friends, Roger and Emily Riggs of Irons, MI. He was preceded in death by his parents. The family wishes to thank Jeff Riggs who was invaluable as a friend and sidekick to Jack during his last months. The family also wishes to thank Hospice for their comfort and care during his last days. A private family memorial service has been held.
