John "Jack" Slattery

John “Jack” William Slattery, 85, of Charlevoix, passed away on Tuesday, May 9, 2023 at his home.  He was born on April 5, 1938, in Detroit, MI, the son of William J. and Madeleine (Morrow) Slattery.

Jack grew up in Detroit and attended St. Scholastica Grade School. He was an altar server at St. Scholastica Catholic Church.  He graduated from Catholic Central High School, after which he attended Ford Trade School, served his apprenticeship, and ultimately became a journeyman tool maker in Detroit.  At age 21, Jack joined the Franciscans as a brother, leaving after 5 years, but sharing fond memories of this time ever after.

He married Karen Treewater on August 25, 1966.  They moved to Charlevoix permanently in 1975, where Jack worked at LexaLite, thereafter he would become the foreman of the tool room at LexaMar, from which he retired.  He was an active member of St. Mary of the Assumption Church, attending daily mass.

On August 27, 2010, Jack married Anne Marie (Barnes) Slattery, who survives.  Also surviving are his son, Sean Slattery; daughter Colleen (Douglas) Carson; step-son, Thomas F. (Pamela) Barnes; step-daughter, Suzanne (Michael) Balter; brother, James F. Slattery and friend, Mary Powers; grandsons, Patrick Slattery and Gabriel Sam.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Karen Slattery and his son, Brian Slattery.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on May 15^th at the Charlevoix Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes with a rosary at 7:30 p.m.  A memorial mass will take place at St. Mary’s Catholic Church on Tuesday, May 16, 2023, at 12:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic School, 1005 Bridge St., Charlevoix, MI 49720.
