John Conway

John Elton Conway, age 78, of Mancelona, died October 6, 2015 at home.

He was born February 23, 1937, to the late John L. and Margaret E. (Boroff) Conway. He married Wanda Deater, of Rapid City, on March 1, 1958.

John lived in Mancelona all his life and contributed to his community as a member of the JayCees, Lions Club charter member and president, school board member and president, and Antrim County Commissioner. He was also a contractor and craftsman who built many homes in Mancelona and the surrounding area. At the time of retirement, he had worked for the Mancelona Public Schools for twenty years. In recent years especially, he valued time spent with his friends and family while golfing, birdwatching, fishing, or telling tales over coffee and donuts.

John was a devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He is survived by his wife Wanda and his children Vicki (Abby Wattenberg) Compton of East Lansing, J. Eric (Janine) Conway of Grand Rapids, and Chris (Rita) Conway of Bloomington, IL; his grandchildren Lisa Compton, Barrett (Lindsey) Compton, Michael Compton, J. Jacob (Tabrina) Conway, Rebecca Conway (Scot) Dykstra, Amanda Conway (Michael) Novak, Briana Conway, Christa Conway (Josh) Williams, and Dana Conway; great-grandchildren Isabella Compton, Addelyn and Nova Conway, Aleeya and Kalani Williams, and Levi, Laney, and Landyn Novak; his siblings, Bill Conway and Bernard Conway of Mancelona and Barb Marshall of Bellaire. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Betty Guyett and Beatrice Lockery and brothers Jim Conway and Ron Conway.

Visitation will be held at Mancelona Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes on Thursday, October 8, 2015 from 2:30-4:30 p.m. and 6:30-8:00 p.m. A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, October 9, 2015 at 11 a.m. at Antrim Church of Christ, 10228 U.S.-131, Mancelona.
