Ball, John Bernard, age 70, suddenly passed away on October 31, 2014 in the Intensive Care Unit at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. He was born April 23, 1944 in Grand Rapids, Michigan to Rose and Bernard Ball. He grew up in Grand Rapids, following his father's steps joining the Grand Rapids Fire Department, promoted to the rank of Equipment Operator over his 40 years of service. He saved many lives and helped many others. He had a good sense of humor and at times would be the source of a good practical joke to be had for the next shift. He was a loyal and caring friend. In 1976 he married Marsha, and they started their lives on a farm in Conklin. They had two children, Mary and Steven. Throughout the years, they traveled to numerous locations including his "Hermitage" up North on Lake Skegemog. John was always up for a "road trip", not thinking twice when it was suggested to go to Montana or his beloved fishing pier in Sebastian Key, FL. During his brief retirement from the Fire Department he was always engaged in helping others, including baiting the hook for special needs children on fishing tournaments as well as the Veterans at the Home of the Veterans on Coit. He also was involved in the Michigan Chapter of Steelheaders and served as Marine Patrol Officer for Antrim County. For those who knew him closest, his heart was always "on the farm." He could usually be found on the moped with his beloved Molly Buttons cradled in his backpack, along for a ride. He is survived by his wife, Marsha, his daughter, Mary, son, Steven, his sister, Sharon Ball, Aunt, Mary Jane Krajewski, Aunt Dorothy and Uncle Jim Tibbie and dear family friend, Fr. Eugene Golas. Christian burial will take place on Monday, November 17, at 10:00 a.m. at SS. Peter and Paul Church, 520 Myrtle St, N.W., Grand Rapids, with Fr. Dennis Morrow presiding. A special thank you to the wonderful team of nurses at Munson Intensive Care Unit in Traverse City and the Whitewater Fire Department who quickly and responsively treated John. A very special thank you to the Grand Rapids Honor Guard for their assistance and support during this most difficult time. Arrangements have been handled by the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Please sign his online guestbook www.mortensenfuneralhomes.com.
